Inspired by the dark underground bars of 1960s Japan, ButohBAR – OUT OF ORDER celebrates and confronts aspects of contemporary life that can be difficult to digest. Straddling the light and the dark, your hearts and minds are carried into the underworld through Butoh’s famous ‘dance of darkness’, cabaret, song, poetry and visual arts, featuring Jackie Stockdale’s extraordinary costumes. This uncompromising experience delves into the dysfunctionality of today, promising audiences an unconventional form of relief by way of a spiritual upheaval.

Butoh, originally called the Dance of Darkness, has its roots in post-WWII Japan in response to the social and cultural turmoil of the time. Classic styles of Butoh sought to express the trauma, anxiety, and confusion of this era through movement, sound, and visual imagery that was often shocking, grotesque, or surreal. Butoh can be seen as an example of an art form that is out of order, challenging the norms of conventional performance styles and offering a way to explore new forms of expression and adaptation in the face of uncertain and unexpected challenges.
Intermittent loud sounds, low lighting of varying intensity, flashing lights, potential nudity and adult themes. Low level of audience involvement. Some content may be upsetting for some audiences.
