The School Library Association of Victoria (SLAV) offers dynamic and inspiring opportunities for teacher-librarians and library teams to build their essential role in engaging and developing lifelong learners. Through leadership, advocacy and collegiality, the association seeks to foster a supportive community of professionals that use best practice examples to inform their various school library roles.

The association operates an active branch network across the state that supports the local level through regular meetings and activities. These branches provide a representative to SLAV’s State Council that governs the association on behalf of its members across Victorian schools.

A varied professional learning program is offered by the association throughout the year including workshops, a masterclass series, a reading forum series and three one day conferences. A range of areas are covered, including major foci: curriculum support of all kinds, inquiry and research skills, collection development – physical and online, digital technologies, literacy enrichment, the development of a reading culture and the creation of effective library spaces.

The association publishes two journals: FYI, which is distributed four times a year, and Synergy, which is produced twice a year as an online publication. Members also receive a fortnightly enewsletter that updates them on current events and opportunities.

SLAV works closely with a variety of like-minded partners in various industries and is always open to opportunities to enhance members’ skills and expertise. SLAV has strong links to other school library associations across Australia and is a partner association of the International Association of School Librarianship.
