Kabuku-Off is the theme for the sixth iteration of ButohOUT! – an annual festival celebrating diversity and authentic expression through the Japanese art form of butoh.
KaBuKu-Off! celebrates the extraordinary beauty in distortion and our fundamental nature of being slightly off-centre, weird and drowning in a sea of chaos
ButohOUT! 2022 Spring Season brings the energy of the Japanese word MATSURI祭 to theConvent. MATSURI 祭loosely translates as “festival” and describes a community gathering space, where rituals are shared with a spirit of celebration.
With food, drink, music and dance, ButohOUT! 2022 will foster connections between artists and non-artists who are willing to play together through the unique fluidity of butoh.
Following the success of last year’s ButohOUT performance (nominated by Green Room Awards 对于 Best Dance Ensemble 2021), Blessed Chaos explores beauty in distortion, with site-specific performances involving visual arts, voice and video installation.
24 – 27 November
Butoh meets grunge in a nightclub environment in Butoh-Night-OUT! With DJ, video projection, karaoke and short acts (attacks) of guerrilla performances! Reviving the past when butoh dancers would dance in nightclubs and strip clubs, exposing their bodies in this dark underground world, ButohOUT! 2022 is summoning the spirits of those raw times, transforming 工业学校 into a contemporary sake/dive bar!
25 – 26 November
A fun and playful workshop for children aged 3 – 12 years old, introducing them to the wonderful Japanese art form of butoh!

Butoh, originally called Ankoku Butoh (Dance of Darkness), was conceived in Japan during the late 50s and early 60s during social turmoil following the war. Rather than aspiring to an aesthetic ideal, the dance attempts to expose the joys and sorrows of life; exploring the most fundamental elements of physical and psychological existence.
ButohOUT! is the only festival of its kind in Australia, focusing on this distinctive art form and aspiring to build on its growing reputation. Providing artists, and community members of all ages a creative ground, ButohOUT! celebrates diversity and authentic expression through the idiosyncratic art form of butoh, and continuously aims to actualise their vision for a radically inclusive artistic practice.
