The Abbotsford Convent Foundation (ACF) supports and presents diverse contemporary arts practice. We are passionate about working collaboratively with artists and in partnership with other arts and cultural organisations to attract diverse audiences, creating new conversations and ways to engage with our unique, multi-use precinct. The Convent’s non-traditional spaces encourage deep artistic investigation and provide an atmospheric setting for performance.
In 2019, the Abbotsford Convent Foundation (ACF) is delighted to be an Associate Partner of Dance Massive – Australia’s largest and only continuing contemporary dance festival.
Since 2009, Dance Massive has welcomed audiences of over 40,000 to 71 contemporary Australian dance works. Dance Massive exists as the simultaneous programming of contemporary dance works and associated public and industry events driven by a consortium: Arts House, Dancehouse and Malthouse Theatre in association with Ausdance Victoria. In 2019, Abbotsford Convent and The SUBSTATION join the Dance Massive consortium as new associate partners.
In 2019, the Convent will be home to two major dance works presented in partnership with our friends Dancehouse. These works will take place in the Southern Magdalen Laundry – a place of incredible architecture and history of contrasting female experiences; from struggle to leadership.
These two works are part of the Convent’s Inaugural Magdalen Laundries Program. Through ambitious programs like this, the Laundries become an accessible canvas for artists, creatives and community. The program provides a space for artists, audiences and communities to experience new practices, narratives and histories, while respecting the heritage and social history of the Laundries. We aim to nurture female (identifying) experience and honour their leadership within these spaces into the future.
We are pleased to present:
‘Dark Night’ by Jill Orr
‘Quake’ by Hellen Sky and Myrian Gourfink with Marc Cauvin and Kasper T. Toeplitz
The Convent is also delighted to partner with Ausdance Victoria to present a series of special showings at the Convent as part of the Open Studios program. These showings feature a selection of artists whose work is site-specific, site-responsive or sits outside traditional performance venues. The showings may inspire and provide insight into the making process, the ways that place inspires structure and choreographic adaptability. Find out more here.
Open Studios participating artists at the Convent include:
- Michael Smith
- Ryiochi Fujimura
- Prue Lang
- Yumi Umiumare
- Leah Landau
The Convent would also like to acknowledge Luke George’s ‘A Call to Actions’ presented at Arts House. Luke George was the inaugural Convent Studio Residency Program recipient in 2018 and developed, rehearsed and invited members of the public to join his ‘Public Actions’ at the Convent. For more information about Luke’s residency see here. For more information about ‘A Call to Actions’ in Dance Massive, see here.
These programs are presented in conjunction with Dance Massive, Ausdance and Dancehouse.
