Drawing Out The Gold
Drawing Out The Gold is an immersive exhibition by Katheryn Leopoldseder, presented as part of Radiant Pavilion Contemporary Jewellery and Object Biennial.
Within a hallowed sepulchre, accompanied by sound and earthy smell, lies an exquisite Crown of Golden Alfalfa.
Drawing Out the Gold looks beyond the harsh means by which the artist’s materials are mined and pays homage to scientific innovations that instead offer us an alternative; a collaboration with the ingenuity of the natural world.
Witnessing the decimation of his childhood land through industrial gold mining, nano- scientist Jorge Gardea-Torresdey discovered that Alfalfa can mine alluvial gold through phytoremediation; drawing precious metal from the soil into its roots, stems and leaves.
The Crown adorns the head, symbolising a shift in thinking. Its flat underside encircles the head like a halo. A historic reference to haloes depicted in religious art. Symbolising illuminated wisdom and bestowed authority.
To wear the Crown materialises the potential of a collaboration between nature and humanity; into a signifier of royal identity; as people capable of positive stewardship of the earth.
