ButohOUT! Festival: Weekly Butoh Workshop
Facilitated by an acclaimed Japanese Australian Butoh dancer, choreographer and a creator of Butoh Cabaret Yumi Umiumare, participants will explore the fundamental method and discipline of Butoh – its philosophy and physical expression – within the framework of contemporary Japanese and Western physical theatre-making.
Experimenting with both internal and external body expression through the theme of ‘forbidden laughter,’ the individual will access their authentic essence and be guided to create their own narratives and movement sequences over six sessions. The workshop is open to participants from all artistic disciplines and levels of experience.
Workshop participants will be mentored by the artists, with the option to create original solo and group works to be presented at the Convent during the public performance season from Thursday 2 May – Sunday 12 May.
This workshop is being held at the Convent as part of the ‘ButohOUT!’ Festival, presented by Yumi Umiumare and Takashi Takiguchi in partnership with the Abbotsford Convent Foundation. ‘ButohOUT!’ brings Butoh, a Japanese theatre and dance form, into the context of Australia’s landscape, culture and history, through a series of workshops, performances and a public forum.
