ButohOUT! Festival: Weekend Butoh Workshop
Breaking the Dark Mask: Butoh, Burlesque Theatre & Mask making with Maude Davey, Willow J Conway and Pimpisa Tinpalit
Facilitated by Yumi Umiumare
This unique series of workshops will guide the participants to explore the interdisciplinary elements in Butoh, through acting, burlesque and mask-making sculptures, working with award winning guest artists, Maude Davey (theatre director), Willow J Conway (Miss Burlesque Australia 2016/17), Pimpisa Tinpalit (sculptor), and workshop facilitator Yumi Umiumare.
The word for laughter in Japanese, warau 笑う comes from the verb wareru 割れる- to break, crack or split. Expert artists will guide participants to experiment with diverse facets and qualities of expression, exploring their individual darkness, lightness and laughter —cracking into the unknown and expanding the method of Butoh.
This workshop is open to participants from all artistic disciplines and levels of experience.
This workshop is being held at the Convent as part of the ‘ButohOUT!’ Festival, presented by Yumi Umiumare and Takashi Takiguchi in partnership with the Abbotsford Convent Foundation. ‘ButohOUT!’ brings Butoh, a Japanese theatre and dance form, into the context of Australia’s landscape, culture and history, through a series of workshops, performances and a public forum.
