This St Heliers Street Gallery exhibition explores historical imagery of girls and women working in Magdalen Laundries around the world.

Artist Annie O’Rourke uses repetition, mirroring, layering and distortion to echo the way in which enduring myths developed about girls and women in these institutions. The works also consider the intense historical reactions to women who were believed to have breached the social standards of the time.

The works speak to the challenge of pulling back the layers to reveal the individuals behind the myth.

Respecting the Convent’s past

This exhibition references Magdalen Laundries around the world.

For close to a century, many residents of the Convent worked in its Magdalen Laundry—without pay, and often in harsh and oppressive conditions.

The Convent was inscribed on the National Heritage List in August 2017, with the Magdalen Laundry and asylum buildings recognised as an important physical record for those Australians and their families known as the Forgotten Australians. We recognise and honour the thousands of girls and women placed in care at the Convent, including those who laboured in the onsite Magdalen Laundry. The harm of institutionalisation and the trauma experienced by many residents is acknowledged as part of the Convent’s heritage.

Today, the Convent provides a space for artists, audiences and communities to experience new practices, narratives and histories, while respecting the heritage and social history of these spaces.
