Pioneer of minimalism and the avant-garde in music, American composer Steve Reich is celebrated in this specially curated performance at the Abbotsford Convent. The ANAM Percussion cohort are joined by their colleagues in the ANAM Piano department to present a trio of works, highlighting and sharing the versatility of their craft.

Aiming to breach the limitations of the percussive soundscape, the concert begins with simplicity in Reich’s Music for pieces of wood, primitive in its use of only claves (wooden sticks) to form remarkable rhythm and structure. His Sextet stretches the acoustic capacity of percussion in an experimental take on the extension of sound, drawing out short-lived notes through the use of extended techniques, such as bowed notes, and the use of synthesisers.

Tying these pieces together is the premiere of a new work by ANAM percussionist, Jonathan Parker, titled Music about Synthesisers, aptly linking Reich’s music together in a cohesive and riveting program. Come and join us to experience what will be a fascinating concert, situated on a fine Thursday afternoon in the Rosina Auditorium.
