How do we dance together when the rules are in flux?

Join us as we discover and rediscover how we shape and are shaped by what is around us. The score is constantly changing, and so we adapt.

With curiosity, five dancers examine how the complex spatial interactions of Contact Improvisation can be revealed as social relationships and identity as the dancers negotiate their way through a mutual process of listening, offering and decision-making. How do we observe social and physical exchanges, what do they reveal of ourselves, and how do we persevere with our own dance when the rules are constantly evolving?

Set amongst time-weathered buildings and beautiful grounds of the Abbotsford Convent, in the Spring sunshine (we hope), we practice dance that brings us in and out of contact and dance that brings us joy.

Contact Improvisation is an improvised dance form in which the dancers move in contact with each other, sharing weight, listening to each other’s movement, and playing with gravity, momentum, friction and inertia.

Creative Team
Choreographed by Caroline Ellis, in collaboration with Gabriel Sinclair, Hadassah Wallis, Tamara Bouman and Sarah Saxon.
