Midst is a reconfiguration of Angela Rossitto’s PhD examination exhibition, an immersive installation based on deep time in the universe. The work doesn’t literally depict this, but evokes endless connections and shows the investment of the artist’s time.

The exhibition title reflects the state of becoming, that the artist enters into with material drawing upon the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari and the artist’s view of the work and practice as always emerging, never complete.

This work highlights the fact that humans are not outside of nature but are enmeshed within it and that human decisions and actions have short term and long-term impacts. The work’s encapsulation of the viewer will cause them to become closely acquainted with the material while recognising the human influence on the work.

About

Angela Rossitto is a contemporary visual artist based in Melbourne. She is currently completing her PhD in the School of Art at RMIT.

Her research interests include deep time and materiality within sculptural and textile practice. Her practice is primarily installation/ sculpture based and she is known for her use of found materials and ‘hand craft’ techniques such as knitting. Her methods are exploratory- driven by experimentation, and her work is not contained but accumulative.

She has exhibited throughout Australia and overseas and undertaken a number of artist residencies, including in New Zealand, Japan and Germany. She has been an award and grant recipient on several occasions, and has been commissioned to produce both individual and collaborative artworks.

As well as her own solo practice, Angela is also a curator and co-director of long running artist run initiative The Wandering Room.
