“Introduction” is the first solo exhibition by Naarm/Melbourne-based glass artist, Rugsley.
Coming from a background in glass fabrication and glazing, the artist was constantly surrounded by the material. This body of work marks the beginning of a growing exploration into challenging what glass can embody beyond its ordinary function.
Using glass as the main medium, Rugsley pushes towards new pathways in contemporary art through sculptural objects, furniture, mirrors and found materials. The works range from original flat glass pieces housed in antique frames to functional sculptural mirrors and furniture, blurring the line between object and artwork. A significant part of the process involves reworking existing materials and minimising the use of virgin glass, granting older objects new life and context.
The show explores reflection, materiality and interaction, creating works where the viewer becomes part of the piece and leans into the idea of functional artwork. Rather than treating glass as something perfect or simply a reflective surface, Rugsley approaches the material in a raw and experimental way, finding new textures, forms and identities within it.
“Introduction” is exactly as the word suggests: an introduction to Rugsley, to the bending practice, and to a new voice within the Naarm/Melbourne art scene.
RUGSLEY (noun): A glass artist driven by a passion for exploring new possibilities within the medium. Drawing on traditional techniques and skills passed down by talented glaziers and artists, he aims to bring an alternative perspective to the world of glass art. From sculptural mirror pieces and custom glass furniture to painted flat glass artworks and experimental objects, his practice embraces the vast and versatile nature of glass. With an open ended approach and a willingness to walk the long road of discovery, Rugsley continues to push boundaries curious to see where the journey will lead.
