In taking the opportunity to identify in response to how you feel, the artist examines the potential of experiencing things to counter representation and to present my voice by asking the viewer to respond instinctively and translate not what is seen but felt. In appreciating the enchanted vulnerability of my work I hope to articulate a space of respectful belonging.
David Helmers works in installations and in his recent body of work made in response to attending a residency in Japan for Master’s research, he explored the notion of enchanted vulnerability. As a gay man addressing stigma and stereotype, he encourages the active dispensing of presuppositions in creating space for experiences that foreground how we feel about things as a way of knowing.
Saturday 14 March (2-3 pm) David will conduct a one-hour demonstration of how he makes his work. The artist will be in the Gallery until 4pm.
Sunday 15 March (3-5 pm) the exhibition will be officially opened by Stephen Loo, Interdisciplinary Professor of Art & Design, the University of NSW.
