Sample a range of creative workshops for small hands and big imaginations in the third helping of Convent Kids: Smörgåsbord.
These school holidays, artists Pennie Jagiello, Kids’ Own Publishing, Alice Tsiavos and Nicky Tsekouras come together in three sustainable summer sessions — using found materials of all shapes and sizes to create brand new objects and artworks. The perfect recipe for fun!
In this workshop children are encouraged to think about how to describe their time at Abbotsford Convent by making a wearable story that can be shared with others.
With an installation of curated flora (fallen, not picked!) collected from the convent grounds, stencils, and printed images taken on site of the gardens, fauna and buildings help to assist what each child individually connects to as part of their own experience.
Kids’ Own artists will guide children in the creation and curation of collaborative, hand-made 12 page books which will be copied and shared on the spot. Children will have the opportunity to curate the theme and order of contents, contribute art and text and decide together on titles, blurbs and other publishing considerations as well as learn the magic behind the folding and publishing.
Each instant book created at Smorgasbord will be a limited edition celebrating children’s art and creativity in the moment, and will be launched with fanfare.
Can you invent a way of drawing where you don’t hold the pencil?
In this workshop children are invited to use found materials to devise new approaches to mark-making by building unusual drawing tools.
Join artist Nicky Tsekouras in this imaginative hands-on workshop to express yourself through colour, texture and playful paper collage. Using tissue, textured card, patterned scraps and recycled finds, kids will craft a one-of-a-kind ‘mural’ that represents them.
Through cutting, layering and arranging, they’ll discover how different materials can come together to tell a story about their identity in a bold and colourful way. This workshop is all about celebrating individuality, creativity and the joy of making something truly unique. No art experience needed – all you need is yourself.
