Presented by Convent Kids

This is a short and fun workshop, introducing Butoh in a playful and family-friendly way. The participants will create the art installations/costumes with everyday objects to jump headfirst into a world of transformation and shape-shifting, unleashing their inner creatures.

Depending on the weather, we will go and visit many visible and invisible Peek-A-Boos around the Convent while feeling the wind, listening to the grounds, smelling the sound!

Children aged 3 – 12 and their adults are invited into the mysterious and unknown world of the Peek-A-Butoh!

About

The Japanese  art form of Butoh encourages the dancer to break free of rhythm, and not to follow the music. Dissonance is appreciated, ugliness and perversity are embraced.

In this post-pandemic era, when the future is so uncertain, Butoh is gaining in popularity across the world. Born out of darkness, the practice of Butoh can be a shining light—giving hope in the dark, momentary silence within the chaos, and peace amidst tension.

Accessibility

The Packing Room is wheelchair accessible.

Gender-neutral and accessible toilets are available close to the venue.

The Convent’s outdoor spaces are wheelchair accessible. Gender-neutral and accessible toilets are available at several locations within the Abbotsford Convent Precinct.

Your safety is our priority

  • The capacity of each session is 20-25 participants to ensure physical distancing and to comply with government directions (please note: we will continue to adhere to government restrictions, and will notify you directly if this affects this program);

  • We will open windows and doors for ventilation – you might need warmer clothes.

  • Please eat all food, and take breaks, outside whenever possible.

  • You are encouraged to bring your own water bottle as the site water fountains may be switched off to reduce contamination;
