This weekly butoh workshop is facilitated by local legend, Japanese-Australian Butoh dancer, choreographer and a creator of Butoh Cabaret, Yumi Umiumare.

Over five sessions, participants will explore the fundamental method, discipline and philosophy of Butoh in order to explore their creative process. The workshop will promote explorations of various concepts including ‘Imagining’, ‘Articulating’ and ‘Shaping’, while providing a platform for participants to create and develop their own work.

“Color is a power which directly influences the soul”

— Wassily Kandinsky

Through the artistic theme “Primal Colour”, this workshop creates space for participants to explore their authentic movement vocabulary. As we all have our own unique creative process and movement quality which can form habitual patterns, this workshop will guide participants to access their unpredictable territories towards unexpected ‘out of the blue’ outcomes. While mixing and stripping back layers of colours, participants will explore the essence and source of emotion through colour, utilising metaphorical expressions.

This course is recommended for those who have done Butoh before, however beginners interested in diving into the deep end and exploring the element of spontaneity are also welcome.

A public performance showing is planned for Saturday 4 & Sunday 5 April at Abbotsford Convent, mentored by Yumi Umiumare. Please note this is optional and you do not have to participate in the performance if you do not wish to.
