Weird | 奇妙 – Beauty in distortion

“We’re all kind of weird and twisted and drowning.” — Author: Haruki Murakami

Traversing our boundaries and challenging our limitations through unique contemporary styles of Butoh, the participants will be introduced to various exercises exploring beauty in distortion. Yumi will facilitate through her inspiration from the original Kabuki theatre of the early 1600s. Originally a subversive non-art form, passionately expressing ugliness and beauty, the word Kabuki comes from the word ‘Kabuku’ meaning ‘bent’ or ‘out of the ordinary’.

This weekly workshop channels anarchic forms of Butoh and preliminary Kabuki to unleash the weird from within.

Artist and facilitator Yumi Umiumare will guide participants in an exploration of this unique hybrid of forms.

Exercises include:

1. 在り方 (arikata): Presence/ Embracing one’s own being

2. 足さばき (ashisabaki) : Various style of walking and stepping

3. なんば・六方 (nanba・roppo): An exploration of unique movements

4. しな (shina): An exploration of sinuous movements

5. 見得/ニラミ (mie・nirami): Extreme styles of movements, such as staring, facial expressions and posing

6. 間 (ma): Active pose, the invisible space between

7. 創作・物語:Creative characters and narratives

At the end of the workshop series, a short performance piece will be created (optional)

About

ButohOUT! 2022 welcomes our fundamental nature of being slightly off centre, weird, twisted and even drowning in a sea of chaos in our post-pandemic contemporary living. Encouraged by the notion of being KaBuKu (bent, out of the ordinary), ButohOUT! 2022 KaBuKu-Off! is celebrating the extra-ordinary and beauty in distortion, individually and collectively, in order to embrace the shining lights within Butoh- Dance of Darkness.
