A joyous sparkling séance and heartfelt dedication.

Bloodlines by The Huxleys is a highlight exhibition presented in partnership with the Kloster Abbotsford und Midsumma Festival 2024. This multi art form exhibition honours and worships legendary artists lost to HIV/AIDS and is a loving tribute to the many influential voices silenced by the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 90s.

Premiering at World Pride and Sydney Festival in early 2023, this is the first chance for Melbourne audiences to experience The Huxleys evocation of the colourful, rebellious and creative spirit of these LGBTIQA+ artists that helped shift the worlds of queer art and culture into new realms.

Celebrating The Huxleys’ skills in costume design, performance and photography, Bloodlines is designed as a joyous sparkling séance celebrating queer excellence — interpreting each artist’s influence and oeuvre in a uniquely Huxley fashion. The work pays a heartfelt debt to artists who paved the way, and informed and inspired the practices of The Huxleys and countless other artists working today.

In the words of Will and Garrett Huxley, “The work we do is only possible because of these formative artists. They fuelled us, fed us and set us free. They should still be with us today. They fought and shone brightly. We stand on the shoulders of these giants, and we carry their torch. We hope these works shine light onto icons and heroes, known and unknown, and share our collective queer history with as much love and sequins that we can muster.”

Stitch ‘n’ Bitch – Quilt Making Workshop

An opportunity for you contribute to the dialogue of queer storytelling and history, never to be forgotten.

You are invited to submit images of a loved one or artist who lost their lives in the HIV/AIDS epidemic. A selection of these images will be transferred to fabric panels and sewn into the evolving Bloodlines Quilt, inspired by historical and legendary AIDS quilts from the 1980s and 1990s.

Stich ‘n’ Bitch features a not-to-be-missed Q&A with artist/curator Jacob Boehme, and artists Will Huxley and Garrett Huxley. They will discuss how they came to work together, the exhibition themes that resonate with the artists and how they came to present the exhibition in World Pride 23, and now at Midsumma Festival with the Abbotsford Convent.

Bring a friend, work on a panel together and share or listen to stories of heroes loved and lost.

Saturday 3 February, 12pm – 3pm, including;
Q&A – 2 – 3pm

About the artists

Will Huxley (AUS/UK) and Garrett Huxley (Yorta/Gumbaynggir/AUS) are Melbourne-based collaborative performance and visual artists. The Huxleys are a dynamic duo of cataclysmic proportion who present camp commentary and spectacle across the visual art, performance and entertainment worlds. Their photography and performance art traverses the classifications of costume, film and recording. A visual assault of sparkle, surrealism and the absurd, The Huxleys saturate their practice and projects with a glamorous, androgynous freedom which sets out to bring some escapism and magic to everyday life.

Since 2014 The Huxleys have performed, exhibited and participated in numerous exhibitions, projects and events in Australia, and internationally in London, Berlin, Moscow and Hong Kong. Solo presentations, performances and commissions include the Melbourne International Arts Festival; Melbourne Fashion Week; Sydney Contemporary; Hong Kong Design Week; Heide Museum of Modern Art; Art Bank, Melbourne; NGV; AGNSW; QAGOMA; AGSA; AGWA; Centre for Contemporary.
