Rock & Roll Writers Festival
Rock & Roll Writers Festival Tour Edition
Fans of music and writing will meet with top musicians, authors, journalists and songwriters in Melbourne next month, as the Rock & Roll Writers Festival heads to Abbotsford Convent.
Australia’s only literary festival celebrating the creative relationship between writing and music, the Rock & Roll Writers Festival will bring more than 15 musicians, novelists, commentators and journalists to the Convent on Sunday 9 April, marking the first time the festival has toured from its home base of Brisbane.
The festival will offer four panel sessions throughout the day, discussing the creative process for writing music, and for writing about music. Topics include the impact of place, identity, desire and fear on the songwriting process, sharing unique perspectives from performers, as well as those writing and working behind the scenes.
Rock & Roll Writers Festival Program | Sunday 9 April 2017
2 – 3pm | Place & Identity | Place Without A Postcode
Place impacts identity – what is the meaning of home. Who we are depends on where we came from, and what shaped us. How does that affect what and how we write – and does the experiencing of other places change the creative process?
Moderator: Nicole Hayes
Panellists: Andrew Stafford, Bunna Lawrie, Mick Thomas
3.30 – 4.30pm | Memoir | This Wheels on Fire
Memoirs can be factual, imaginary, personal, detached, amusing and distressing. As an imperfect recollection of the past, can they be relied upon? Do we have to read between the lines to find the author’s real meaning and intention?
Moderator: Andrew McMillen
Panellists: Jenny Valentish, Hugo Race, Rob Snarski
5 – 6pm | Critics | Nothing Can Hurt Me
On one level, reviewers of music deal solely with an art form or an experience. On another, they reveal how art informs who we are and when done well, provide us with a context for the times. In conversation with three contemporary music critics.
Moderator: Jenny Valentish
Panellists: Michael Dwyer, Andrew McMillen, Kate Hennessy, Mikey Cahill
6.30 – 7.30pm | Songwriters | The Comfort of Madness
Our songwriters give us a detailed look into the mind and the motivation around song writing and the conscious expression of subconscious thoughts, fears and desires through words and music. Is it science or magic – and can it even be explained?
Moderator: Dom Alessio
Panellists: Jess Ribeiro, Mike Noga, Cash Savage
