Abbotsford Convent Open Day
Abbotsford Convent’s Open Day is an annual event that showcases the beautiful grounds and buildings by opening the doors of the diversity of artists, WellBeing and organisation tenants for the public to see. Since 2012 Open Day has been proudly sponsored by Clifton Hill/North Fitzroy Community Branch of the Bendigo Bank.
Tenants, venue hirers and local creative organisations all support Open Day. Visitors will get a chance to experience free children’s workshops from celebrated local icon Circus Oz, as well as a chance to sit in on an acting rehearsal by the internationally renowned National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) and roving participatory events such as African drumming and ukulele lessons. There will be live performance events happening across the day; ranging from a set by Mighty Duke & the Lords at The Shadow Electric Bandroom, to a special performance of works written by the literary tenants in the Bishop’s Parlour. To relax after all that running around you can sit down and eat at any one of the four permanent and very different hospitality outlets onsite: (Cam’s Cafe, Convent Bakery, Kappaya’s Japanese Soul Food and Lentil as Anything or head to Bursaria’s pop-up Pork and Pear Roast.
The Convent is open every day and has been for ten years, so this ‘Open Day’ we will mark this achievement with some extra events that will remind everyone how far we have come and what is still left to do. The St Heliers Street Gallery will host a reflective exhibition revealing the modern history of the Convent and the remarkable act of saving the site from developers. Looking to the future, in the Sacred Heart Laundries will be a an interactive donation box and a chance to peer into the spectacular but run-down industrial spaces.
Parking on the day will be limited so please feel free to walk, ride or catch public transport. The Convent will supply a regular free shuttle bus service from Victoria Park station plus extra bicycle parking facilities.
